(5/7/5, 17-syllable haiku)

morning sunlight breaks~
dew drops reflect prism colors
on daffodil leaves

foxgloves after rain~
a ladybug hides silent
beneath the wet blooms

locust shells clinging
green acorns scattered beneath;
the oak tree in fall

spirited horses~
racing the fields of clover
drumming pounding hooves

a humus carpet~
chattering squirrel pauses
to gather acorns

iris leaves' masses
hide a jack rabbit sleeping;
bed of summer grass

tilled damp garden soil~
caterpillars and green beans
hanging on the vines

a roadrunner runs
in the wet sand of a tide;
tiny footprint trail

the first red rose bloom~
a burst of color beckons
two green hummingbirds

giant sunflowers
brightly waving in the wind;
the bumble bees swarm

an old garden fence~
honeysuckle's aroma
climbing trailing vines

bird's nest on the ground~
fragments of tiny blue eggs
scattered in the grass

a blue jay perches
on the weathered garden fence;
crepe myrtle blooms pink

hollow in a tree~
baby squirrels tiny pink
nature's fragile birth

red oak leaf flutters
falling to the ground below;
a gentle rain comes

sea gulls' evening flight~
waters lapping the shore line
a blue heron hunts

green bullfrog hiding~
a hoot owl screeches loudly
stalking nightly prey

under a full moon~
coyotes call to spirits
eerie serenade

echos of the geese~
thick dark clouds of a fall storm
lone squirrel hides out

fall winds are blowing~
stallions running in morn's light
spirits united

damp carpet of leaves
red, brown and tattered slightly;
wood smoke in the air

bright red Cardinal
picking berries off the vines;
bumble bees protest

clear flowing waters~
nibbling school of gray minnows
flocked around cat tails

shrieking call of fall~
blackbird in a cottonwood
gathers feathered friends

black crow calls echo~
fall winds blow in from the north
stallions stomp the ground

powder puff flowers
mimosa tree in full bloom;
sparrows' gathering

a pond of tadpoles~
after the morning rain storms
the frog chorus sings

yellow butterfly
folding wings against the wind;
a cocoon empty

the red fox hunting~
a quiet silent stalking
unsuspecting fowl

dawn breaks in silence~
dew drops glisten like diamonds
on foxglove's first blooms

foggy morning haze
in midst of betulaceae;
a foliage path

winter winds blowing
whistling fiercly through the oaks;
eery sounds at dusk

icicles hanging~
the boughs transformed overnight
into glassy prisms

autumn pecan trees~
heavy-laden as squirrels
gather winter fare

black bass and catfish
a stock pond in the pasture;
cattle grazing near

a lone hoot owl calls
breaking the night's silent calm;
nocturnal hunter

wild geese flying south~
their haunting calls echoing
over frozen fields

morning glories trail
over the garden fences;
tulips blooming red

green shoots of iris
peeping up through dampened soil;
sunlight baths beauty

the bullfrogs' night song~
raccoons washing in the stream
watching tadpoles swim

a pelican gulps
a sand dollar in the tide;
then looks for fat fish

the skies black and green~
an approaching thunderstorm
demands attention

spider's woven web
a gray moth struggles for naught;
the captor watches

crimson sunset blaze~
in the distance a wolf pack
gathers for hunting

raging summer heat~
a horny toad searching for
crickets stops to rest

driftwood on the shore~
sea gulls fish in evening's tide
as red herons wade

a lone mockingbird
listens to calls across fields;
then recites the songs

dragonflies flitting
over the black lake waters;
a nautical dance

billows of clouds form
covering the setting sun;
oh orange splendor

snow capped mountain tops~
in the distance a lone deer
skips on frozen fields

great magnolia tree
blooming in magnificence;
robin's cool haven

a quail scampers at night
calling calling for her mate;
chasing a firefly

a lone whip-poor-will
breaks the silent evening
with his haunting cry

a cocoon opens~
a queen slips out of darkness
fluttering her wings

evening's tide flows in
carrying driftwood to shore;
new home for beetles

the evening air~
lavender bushes flourish
with sweet aroma

yellow jonquils thick~
home to groups of lady bugs
flitting tiny wings

on the sandy shore
a fat pelican waddles;
laden down with fare

billows of clouds form~
winds blow a yellow feather
fluttering color

down by the river
raccoons washing evening's fare;
the frog chorus ends

covey of bobwhites
all asleep in a circle;
wary of danger

sandpipers on shore
running to and fro at dusk;
hawks soar in circles

wintery snowfall
a lone wolf runs across fields;
ghostly silhouette

at mornings first light
a raven sits in the tree;
picking mulberries

pear trees blossoming
sending aroma downwind;
monarch spreads its wings

Canadian geese flock~
winds blow over the marshland
time to fly southward

field of lavender~
just beyond the grove of trees
a coyote hunts

a purple foxglove~
two spotted red ladybugs
crawl deeper inside

high winds are blowing
red haze blurring horizons;
hear that distant howl?

invisible winds~
a seed pod floats through the air
landing near foxglove

the river flowing~
red clay gives up tiny trails
footprints of shore birds

with spring's arrival
comes nature's spiritual
dance of the season

lilac's aroma~
honey bees swarm with delight
collecting nectar

flight of the eagle~
soaring over stands of oak
searching with keen eyes

lovely mourning dove~
sing your odd lonely songs now
as the sun sets low

a morning rain storm~
barn swallows fluttering wings
sitting in a row

aroma of pears
ripening on the branches;
preserves on brown toast

changing of seasons
flocks of wild geese flying south;
hear the lonesome calls

splashes echoing
black bass flop in the water;
a red moon rises

swaying grasses dance~
menacing billowing clouds
summer thunderstorm

autumn breezes blow~
a red maple leaf flutters
caught up in the gust

soaring on the wind~
two monarchs in fall breezes
dance the last dances

spring winds are blowing~
wisps of dandelion fluff
stuck to spider's web

pastel spring skyline~
lone hawk soars in the breezes
fading into dusk

heavy in the air
aroma of wild garlic;
green grasshoppers pounce
